How to reduce kitchen waste
Your kitchen is one of the easiest (and most fun) places to start making small changes that lead to a more sustainable lifestyle. From food scraps to glass jars, there are so many simple ways to keep waste out of the landfill and give your everyday items a second life. Whether you're already a low-waste pro or just starting out, these tips are easy to try and make a real difference.
Use glass jars to refill pantry staples like rice, oats, flour and more at bulk stores.
Save your corks to recycle them through re-cork or other recyclers. Check out our list here!
Repurpose glass bottles and jars for flower vases.
If you don’t need a whole bottle of spices, get a smaller amount from a refill/bulk store.
Use expired grains to make a bird feeder using an empty paper towel roll and hang it on a piece of twine.
Save and freeze scraps from onions, garlic, carrots and celery to make a veggie broth before composting.
Freeze your fresh food before it goes bad.
Opt for loose leaf teas from a bulk store over single use tea bags.
Keep ripe avocados fresh for weeks in a sealed jar of water in the fridge.
Re-use plastic packaging (from items like pasta, rice, etc.) to use as kitty litter bags or bring them to a recycler.
Every small shift adds up. Don't stress about being perfect- just pick one or two changes that feel doable and build from there. It's all part of the cycle!
